PILSEN — Despite an objection to his candidacy, a fifth candidate has landed a spot on the 25th Ward ballot.
Ruling that Roberto "Beto" Montano had enough petition signatures, the Chicago Board of Elections confirmed his candidacy this week. Five candidates — including veteran Ald. Danny Solis — will now run for the seat next month.
After the board's decision, Montano debuted campaign website Montano for Us. The financial advisor previously served as Solis' chief of staff from April 2005 to January 2008.
Montano was one of two 25th Ward candidates who faced objections. The other candidate, data scientist Troy Hernandez, dropped out of the race in December.
In addition to Solis and Montano, three other candidates are running to represent the ward: CPS science teacher Ed Hershey; community activist Jorge Mujica, a Socialist; and Byron Sigcho, lead instructor at UIC's Center for Literacy and a Pilsen Alliance board member.
The objection against Montano was filed by West Loop resident Reyahd Kazmi, director of business advancement and governmental affairs at the National Youth Advocate Program. Kazmi previously served as chief of staff for former city Treasurer Stephanie Neely and lives in the 25th Ward.
The 25th Ward on the city's Lower West Side includes parts of Pilsen, Chinatown, the West Loop, Little Italy and Heart of Chicago.
The election is Feb. 24.
