CHICAGO — Two women in their 20s died in a fire in Belmont Gardens late Thursday.

Around 11:05 p.m., police officers were called to a home in the 4500 block of West Parker Avenue and found the women dead upon arrival, according to Officer Ana Pacheco, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 11:07 p.m., and the first engine arrived at 11:10 p.m., according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

Langford said the fire started in the garden apartment of a brick, two-story apartment building that houses multiple units.

One woman was taken to Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, while the other woman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Langford.

The cause of the blaze is unknown, said Langford, adding that no smoke detectors were found in the basement.

No further information was immediately available.
