Thomas Merton Society to Host Author Talk About Celtic Music, History

NORWOOD PARK — Author June Sawyers will discuss her book about Thomas Merton and an island off the coast of Scotland that is renowned for its tranquility and natural beauty at an Oct. 19 event at Immaculate Conception Parish.

The Chicago chapter of the Thomas Merton Society, which is dedicated to promoting the work of Merton an American Catholic writer, monk, poet and social activist will host the presentation by Sawyers, the author of "Days and Nights on Iona: Celtic Contemplation, 'Thin Places,' and Thomas Merton."

Sawyers, who has written and lectured extensively on Celtic music, history and culture, will show a slideshow that features Celtic music and pictures of Iona, which was the center of Gaelic monasticism for four centuries and is now a popular tourist destination.

Donations are welcome and refreshments will be served at the event, scheduled for 2 p.m. Oct. 19 at Immaculate Conception Parish Rectory Assembly, 7211 W. Talcott Ave.
