BUCKTOWN —  Chicken lovers in Bucktown only had to wait five weeks for a popular family-run eatery to reopen, and for anyone who pops into the new Nick's Pit Stop on Monday, the restaurant will offer a free side dish or a drink with any purchase, it was announced Sunday.

"It's great; we are very happy to be back," said Yolanda Resendiz, who was helping to ready the new restaurant for the first day back in business late Sunday with her husband, Victor Resendiz.

Victor Resendiz said people have been peering in the windows and asking them when Nick's Pit Stop will reopen.

The eatery closed abruptly in September, just before the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Located at 2023 N. Damen Ave., the new spot, formerly home to Middle Eastern restaurant Babylon, is just a few doors north of the eatery's original location, which opened in 1997.

The new spot does not look much different than the old one, with framed newspaper clippings featuring the eatery on the walls along with a collection of vintage gas station signs.

Nick's Pit Stop serves char-broiled chicken as well as sides like baked beans and chili.

Previously, Vic Resendiz, the couple's son and a spokesman for the family-run restaurant, said that the eatery would hope to open before Halloween.

"We are excited about the new spot and being under new property owners. We will have more freedom to do more things, to elevate what we have already and accentuate our chicken," Vic Resendiz previously said.

Nick's Pit Stop, Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday; 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Ph: 773-342-9736.
