BUCKTOWN — After a 17-year run, popular chicken joint Nick's Pit Stop closed just before the Labor Day weekend, leaving those hoping to pick up some of their famed charbroiled chicken with only a note.

"We're moving to a new location! Don't worry we're not going far," read a sign in the window that advised customers to "come back soon and look out for our location and new address."

Nick's Pit Stop opened in 1997 at 2011 N. Damen Ave. and offered chicken as well as sides like baked beans and chili.

Vic Resendiz, a spokesman for the family-run restaurant, said that the eatery would be moving just a few doors north, to 2023 N. Damen Ave. formerly home to Middle Eastern restaurant Babylon.

"We are excited about the new spot and being under new property owners. We will have more freedom to do more things, to elevate what we have already and accentuate our chicken," Resendiz said in an interview Friday.

Resendiz said he is hoping that Nick's Pit Stop, which is in the process of moving equipment over to the new spot and building it out, can be open by Halloween or earlier.

Bucktown resident Jennifer McCoy said she and her husband would order a whole chicken to-go from Nick's Pit Stop about once every couple of weeks.

"We hope they come back soon," McCoy said.

Julie Horowitz Jackson, owner of Virtu retail shop at 2035 N. Damen, said she was "thrilled Nick's Pit Stop is staying in the neighborhood" as her husband and son "live off" the chicken and eat there every week.

Jackson, who is a vegetarian, said that she enjoyed the restaurant's mac and cheese.

In addition to the Bucktown location, Nick's Pit Stop has a second location, Nick's Pit Stop #2 at 3652 W. Lawrence Ave. in Albany Park.
