CHICAGO — Mayor Rahm Emanuel will join other elected officials today to announce federal funding for the long-awaited lakefront bridges connecting Kenwood and Oakland and the lakefront.

The project has been in the works since 2009 when residents were promised a $16 million renovation on the outdated bridges but has been at a standstill until federal funds could be secured.

The 41st and 43rd Street twin bridges will replace the 75-year-old bridge at 43rd as part of the mayor's development plan, Chicago Neighborhoods Now. There is no word on whether the original design by Cordogan Clarke and Associates will be used to connect Kenwood and Oakland to the lakeshore.

U.S. Sen Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Gov. Pat Quinn and U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley (D-5th) will join Emanuel at the intersection of 41st Street and Lake Park Avenue for the announcement.
