GOLD COAST — Customers who left shoes at Tom's Gold Coast Shoe Repair and returned to pick them up, only to find the store closed, shouldn't worry — Harry's down the street has their kicks safe and sound.

Harry's Gold Coast Shoe Repair, a decades-old underground specialty shop tucked away at 838 N. State St. under the former Johnny's Grill, has all the shoes left behind at Tom's Gold Coast Shoe Repair at 10 E. Elm St., which recently closed to make way for a residential high-rise development that's currently in the works.

Tom's owner, Tom Koris, was forced to vacate the sister shop he has run since the '70s because "the building is being torn down," according to his nephew, Peter, who now operates Harry's, formerly his father's shop.

"They couldn't find a new location, so he decided to retire," Peter Koris said of Tom, 68.

Tom "used to work with my father first, and then he used to work for us, and split over to his own business" 40 years ago, Peter Koris said.

Koris said Harry's is happy to keep serving Tom's longtime customers.

"There are people looking for their shoes," Koris said. "Don't worry, we have them here."
