CHICAGO — A 55-year-old Logan Square man had been fighting with his girlfriend when he followed her to work and stabbed her approximately 22 times, prosecutors said.

Hector Rivera, 55, of the 3100 block of North Kimball Avenue, was identified by authorities as the man who stabbed Erenbira Pimentel-Hernandez in the 4700 block of North Lawndale Avenue around 8:20 a.m. Wednesday.

Rivera and Pimentel-Hernandez got in an argument early Wednesday morning, prosecutors said. Rivera grabbed a knife from his house and went to an address in the 4700 block of North Lawndale Street, where he knew Pimentel-Hernandez was going to work as a caregiver.

He followed the woman into a stairwell and confronted her, prosecutors said. The argument from earlier continued. Rivera pulled out a steak knife and stabbed Pimentel-Hernandez approximately 22 times, prosecutors said.

Someone in the building heard screaming, prosecutors said. When the resident went to investigate, he saw Rivera standing over the bleeding woman.

Pimentel-Hernandez was transferred in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.

Police recovered the murder weapon from the stairwell, prosecutor said. Rivera allegedly briefly fled to Indiana after the murder but returned to Chicago. He was arrested and gave a videotaped admission about stabbing Pimentel-Hernandez.

Having been previously convicted of attempted murder in 1989, Rivera was ordered held without bail during a brief court hearing on Tuesday.
