IRVING PARK — Bike lights aren't just a smart idea when riding at night, they're the law.

The Chicago Municipal Code (9-52-080) specifies that all bikes in use at night must be equipped with both a headlamp that emits a white light and a rear red reflector.

To raise awareness of the requirement, the Chicago Department of Transportation and the Chicago Police Department are teaming up on a bike light giveaway in the 33rd Ward. Thursday's 7:30-9 p.m. giveaway will be held at the intersection of Irving Park Road and California Avenue.

Residents are encouraged to pick up a free light and learn more about bike safety rules.

The event is being organized by the ward's Transportation Action Committee in conjunction with the police and CDOT's bike ambassadors after identifying intersections of concern and common offenses by cyclists, drivers and pedestrians.

Those interested in attending the next meeting of the TAC, scheduled for Aug. 28, should email Dana Fritz at dana@33rdward.org.

Items on the agenda include updates on planned bike lanes for Belmont, Kedzie and Elston, as well as feedback from a recent tour of the Berteau Greenway and Manor Avenue.
