Toddler Among 14 Shot Since Friday Night

CHICAGO — Five children under the age of 15 were among more than a people shot across the South and West Sides in weekend violence.

A 13-year-old boy was killed in a shooting in a gang-related in East Garfield Park Friday that also wounded six others. The boy had gang ties, police said.

Meanwhile, a 3-year-old boy was critically wounded after being shot in Brighton Park in another incident police believe to be gang related.

A 24-year-old man was shot in Rogers Park on Saturday. He was in the 1700 block of West Farwell Avenue about 1:30 p.m. when he was shot in the leg, police say. He was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where his condition had stabilized.

In other nonfatal shootings: 

• About 12:45 p.m. Saturday, in the 5200 block of South Hoyne Avenue in Back of the Yards, a 26-year-old man was found shot in the chest while sitting in his car. An acquaintance drove him to Holy Cross Hospital. He was then taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, police said.

• Around 1:35 a.m. Saturday, a 24-year-old man was shot in Austin, police said.

Someone shot the man in the 5600 block of West Chicago Avenue, striking him in his head, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago Police Department spokesman. The man walked to West Suburban Hospital, where he is in stable condition.

• About a half an hour earlier, a 19-year-old man was shot in Bronzeville.

The shooting occurred around 12:55 a.m. at 39th Street and Prairie Avenue, Alfaro said. The man was standing on the sidewalk when a gunman opened fire, striking him in upper right arm. He is in stable condition after being transported to Stroger Hospital, Alfaro said.

No one is in custody for this shooting.

• Another 19-year-old was shot about 12:30 a.m. in Roseland, according to police.

The man was sitting in a car at a stop sign at 102nd Street and Michigan Avenue when he "heard shots and felt pain," Alfaro said. 

The man, who is a documented gang member, suffered from a graze wound in his arm, and transported himself to Roseland Community Hospital where he is in stable condition, Alfaro said.

• Around 9 p.m. Friday, a man, 24, was shot while standing in the 1800 block of East 79th Street in South Shore.

Someone from within a dark-colored car fired shots, striking him in his right leg, foot and buttocks, Alfaro said.  He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
