CHICAGO — A toddler is in critical condition after being shot on the Southwest Side Friday night and three people are in custody, authorities said.

Around 10:15 p.m., the 3-year-old boy was standing on the sidewalk with his mother in the 4400 block of South Sacramento Avenue when two women and two men walked by them, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

When one of the men reached the end of the block, he turned and opened fire, striking the boy in his right hip and abdomen, Alfaro said, citing preliminary information.

The boy was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Police on Saturday said three people were in custody and charges were pending, but no more information was available.

No other details surrounding the shooting were immediately available.
