BOYSTOWN — A Logan Square Mexican restaurant will soon be opening a takeout-focused spot in Boystown — and bringing its vegan options with it.

Salsita, 3706 N. Halsted St., is owned by Erick Torres, the man behind La Cocina in Logan Square, 2901 N. Kedzie Ave.

Torres, whose parents emigrated from Mexico to Chicago years ago, opened La Cocina in hopes of offering the traditional food he and his family eat at home, Torres said.

The restaurant also specializes in tacos, burritos and tortas with seitans and vegan cheeses. He's bringing those options to Salsita, too.

"People really seem to like it," Torres said. "It's similar to traditional Mexican food, just healthier."

Salsita — as its name suggests — will be offering the additional specialization of different types of salsa. Besides traditional red and green salsa, the restaurant will likely offer habanero pineapple salsa, sweet chipotle salsa and other toppings that are still in development.

The BYOB restaurant will be focused on takeout and counter seating. It will likely be open until 5 a.m. on weekends to cater to the after-bar crowd, Torres said.

He aims to open in the next month, pending various city permits.
