Off-Duty Officer Shoots Man Outside Restaurant

By Alex Parker | February 23, 2014 10:03am

CHICAGO — An off-duty police officer who encountered two people causing a "disturbance" at a restaurant Saturday night shot one of the men, police said.

The off-duty officer came across two men inside a restaurant in the 4300 block of West Fullerton Avenue in Hermosa about 9 p.m. Saturday. Police said the men were causing a "disturbance."

The officer told the suspects he was police and escorted them outside. One of the men then went to his vehicle, got a handgun and pointed it at the officer, police said.

The officer, "in fear of his life," fired at the man with the gun, striking him in the leg, police said.

Both men fled in their vehicle, but were taken into custody nearby.

The man who was shot was treated at an area hospital. The second man had no injuries, police said.

Area North detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority are investigating the shooting.
