CHICAGO — The Chicago Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that it was postponing planned weekend work on the Bloomingdale Trail bridge at Western Avenue due to "weather complications."
Western Avenue was going to be closed from Friday night to early Monday morning so crews could replace the 100-year-old railroad bridge. That work has not yet been rescheduled, the city said Wednesday.
"The current bridge in place at Western and Bloomingdale avenues causes significant traffic bottlenecking as concrete piers reduce four lanes to two as vehicles approach the bridge," the city said in a news release about the project.
"The upcoming work is the first step for improvements to the site, including a new bridge that will allow better traffic flow on Western and create an access point to the Bloomingdale Trail, the centerpiece of The 606 rails-to-trails project," the city said.
When the construction is rescheduled, crews will be repairing parts of the concrete bridge and removing some segments entirely.
Similar weekend bridge work and closures will eventually happen at Ashland Avenue and Cortland Street, and Milwaukee Avenue and Leavitt Street as well.
