WICKER PARK —  Amid a local "baby boom" that has seen the planned openings of several child-focused businesses, a day care center and preschool in Wicker Park has shuttered, just as a new day care is being built next to the now-empty storefront.

The former ABC Daycare, located on the ground floor of a condo building at the northwest corner of North and Hermitage avenues has gone up for rent, while a new day care, The Gardner School, prepares to open on the southwest corner.

Nicole Preston, owner of ABC Daycare and Preschool at 1634 W. North Ave., voluntarily dissolved her business license on Dec. 19, according to the Secretary of State website.

Founded by Preston, ABC Daycare and Preschool LLC opened in December 2011 and closed in November 2013, according to parents.

A listing for the 3,800-square-foot space, which is asking $26 per square foot, went online earlier this month, and several day care providers have shown interest in the property, said real estate broker Katie Whelan.

Whelan said she's trying to "lease it all as one space, hopefully, to another day care," and added that the space is "already built out for a day care [tenant]."

Whelan described the location, just west of Ashland Avenue, as being in the heart of Bucktown and Wicker Park and offering "tons of natural sunlight."

The closing comes as the Gardner School, owned by a Nashville, Tenn.-based chain, is remodeling a 15,000-square-foot building at 1612 W. North Ave. that had been home to Delta Technologies.
