CHICAGO — Police said a 27-year-old woman is in custody after a fire she set to her boyfriend's couch Wednesday night left six people injured, including a child.

The fire broke out in the 7100 block of South Jeffery Boulevard in South Shore about 10:45 p.m., said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

Five adults and a child were injured and taken to area hospitals, the Fire Department said. Their injuries were not life-threatening, Estrada said.

The fire was brought under control in the four-story apartment building by about 11:10 p.m., according to the Fire Department. Responders rescued some victims, authorities said.

During the investigation, a man injured in the fire told officers that he had an argument with his girlfriend, and she torched his couch, Estrada said.

The woman was arrested sometime Thursday, and charges are pending, police said.
