NEW CITY — A Back of the Yards woman delivered a stillborn baby after she was attacked by a group of people who asked what gang she was with earlier this week, officials said Wednesday.

The 25-year-old woman was attacked by several women and one man in the 4800 block of South Laflin Street about 11 p.m. Monday, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.

Cops said she was asked what gang she was affiliated with before the attack. Police said they don't have information that suggests she belonged to a gang, but that her boyfriend is a known gang member in the area.

The woman, who lives in the 4700 block of South Paulina Street, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where she delivered a stillborn baby Tuesday.

The baby was pronounced dead at 2:44 p.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Officials there said "maternal assault" contributed to the baby's death.

The woman was more than 7-1/2 months pregnant, according to the morgue.

Alfaro said the attack appeared to be gang-related. Police still are investigating the death of the baby and had not ruled the death a homicide as of early Thursday morning, Alfaro said.
