CHICAGO — A man wreaked havoc with his car Sunday night when he got into a fender bender, sped off from the scene and slammed into a car, badly injuring at least five people.

The 30-year-old man was driving a Nissan Maxima when he rear-ended a Volvo near 67th Street and Indiana Avenue about 11 p.m., said Officer John Mirabelli, a police spokesman.

As police approached the accident, the man drove off westbound, Mirabelli said. It was unclear if anyone was injured in the fender bender.

He then hit a van near 67th and State streets, injuring himself and passengers in the van, the police spokesman said.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, six people were taken to area hospitals.

The fire department said three were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center and Stroger Hospital in serious-to-critical condition. Three others were taken to Saint Bernard Hospital, one in fair-to-serious condition and two in good condition, according to the fire department.

Mirabelli said the driver of the Nissan was also in stable condition, and that the conditions of four of the people injured were stabilized.

The driver of the Nissan is in custody with charges pending, Mirabelli said.
