CHICAGO — A 19-year-old woman ran over a man with her car in Woodlawn after the ex-con tried to rob her Tuesday morning, a law enforcement source said.

The woman was driving her sedan in the 6700 block of South Langley Avenue about 9:50 a.m. when a man came up to her, apparently offering either to sell or buy drugs as a ruse, police said.

Police said he may have tried to get into the car through her window and rob her, and the two fought for control of the wheel, police said. In the struggle, she struck the man with her car, police said.

She fled the scene on foot before officers arrived, leaving her car at the scene. She later turned herself into police, police said. Charges were pending until authorities realized she may have been a victim of attempted robbery, police said.

The man, identified as Derrick Woodhouse, 39, of the 7300 block of South Carpenter Street, was pronounced dead at the Cook County medical examiner's office at 1:40 p.m., authorities said.

Woodhouse had served time for a drug-related offence in addition to several armed robberies and gun-related charges, court records show.

A law enforcement source said the state's attorney's office cited the 19-year-old for operating a car without insurance but declined to press more charges. The case is under investigation.

An earlier version of this article did not state that the woman fled on foot.
