JEFFERSON PARK — The decrepit building at Milwaukee, Foster and Central avenues is set to get a facelift under a deal brokered by Ald. John Arena (45th).

By approving a zoning change, Arena allowed the property owner to tear down a vacant building that once housed a currency exchange and add parking for a Walgreens drug store at 5230 Mikwaukee Ave.

In exchange for the additional parking, National Shopping Plazas Inc. agreed to renovate the entire building’s façade, which is dilapidated and outdated.

“I trust you'll agree that it is a significant improvement over the current façade,” Arena wrote in an email blast to ward residents.

The renovations include new brick veneers, new aluminum awnings and new signage.

Representatives of National Shopping Plazas Inc. could not be reached for comment.
