Ald. Pat O'Connor (40th) said residents of his ward have been "struggling" to cope with jet noise.

A civic coalition said Rahm Emanuel needs to do more to stop the jet noise over the Northwest Side.  

The measure was sponsored by Alds. Mary O'Connor, Margaret Laurino, John Arena and Patrick O'Connor.

"No one ever said, 'You are going to have hundreds of more flights over head,' the congressman said.

Residents don't qualify for free federal soundproofing, but they can air gripes at a meeting next month.

Rosemarie Andolino should have done more to address noise complaints, a coalition of civic groups said.

From March 2013 to March 2014,  the number of complaints filed about jet noise rose  645 percent.

The changes are designed to reduce the chance of mid-air collisions.

More should be done to reduce the impact jet noise is having on the Far Northwest Side, residents said.

One city official said changing flight paths would just move noise from one neighborhood to another one.

Complaints to an O'Hare Airport noise hotline rose 124 percent from September to November of last year.

The new runway will open Thursday, despite opposition by several Far Northwest Side community groups.

The new runway will open as scheduled on Oct. 17 despite the opposition, FAA officials said Wednesday.

The group urged federal officials to halt plans to send more jets over the far Northwest Side of Chicago.

The two planes hit each other as they were taxiing Wednesday night.
