Residents hope Mariano's will move into the old Dominick's as discount grocers now dominate South Shore.

The former Dominick's at Lincoln and Foster avenues will become a Tony's Finer Foods this spring.

The Damen Avenue Dominick's, which closed last month, has been sold.

Finding new owners and assessing food access challenges are part of the assignment, Mayor Emanuel said.

The alderman encouraged residents to explore Edgewater's independent grocery stores.

Mariano's announced last week it would take over the Dominick's at Sheridan Road and Foster Avenue.  

"The reality check is seeing the aisles become empty," a worker said. The store will close Dec. 28.

The Rogers Park Food Co-op hopes to sign up 300 members by August 2014, organizers said.

The grocer bought 10 other stores in the Chicago area, including two within city limits.

Ald. Harry Osterman said he's been in touch with potential buyers, like Mariano's and Whole Foods.

Both Harry Osterman and Joe Moore hope Trader Joe's or Mariano's will replace closing Dominick's stores.
