WEST ROGERS PARK — The former Dominick's grocery store at 6623 N. Damen Ave. will become a Cermak Fresh Market, Ald. Debra Silverstein (50th) announced.

The store, between Damen and Ridge avenues, closed on Dec. 28, along with all other Dominick's grocery stores.

Cermak Fresh Market owns 12 stores throughout the Midwest, the majority of which are in Chicago, said Kosta Cios, the company's attorney, when reached by phone Friday.

Cios said there was no immediate opening date for the new store.

"We're in the planning stages right now," he said.

The company also bought a former Dominick's location in suburban Lincolnwood, Cios said.

Silverstein said Cermak would offer a full-service grocery store with 50,000 square feet of space.

"The departure of Dominick’s from the City of Chicago left a large gap in the shopping needs of many residents of the 50th Ward," Silverstein said Friday. "I am very happy that Cermak is stepping in, and I would like to be the first one to officially welcome them to the neighborhood!"

In October, Safeway, the parent company of Dominick's, announced it was getting out of the Chicago market, including ridding itself of 15 stores in the city.
