Sources confirmed that the school, which has a large special education population, could close.

Teachers at Joseph Stockton Elementary say their school is merging with Courtenay Elementary.

"If you have to take a course to teach a book, you pick another book," Marjane Satrapi said.

Union boss Karen Lewis said the plan to close as many as 55 schools would "send our district into chaos."

The council hoped to attract a larger pool of candidates with an April 30 deadline for principals.

Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd) traveled to Springfield Tuesday to make a last-minute plea for CPS schools.

Lincoln Elementary is already leasing space offsite for the 2013-14 school year.
