"The numbers tell a pretty compelling story that something is wrong," one South Loop resident said.

The facility broke ground last year and will now open in July 2017 after having to raise more money.

Planners envision a four-story building with 53 classrooms, including three science labs, two art rooms.

One developer said neighborhood property values could drop by 25 percent, but others aren't worried.

The number of South Loop shootings so far this year is higher than the total any year this decade. 

The city seeks $11 million in TIF funds, more than previously reported, for the neighborhood school. 

Aldermen Dowell and King are trying to bolster the anti-violence programs that are known to work.
