Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said police are making arrests but gun sentencing laws aren't tough enough.

Escalante headed the Chicago Police Department temporarily after Garry McCarthy was fired.  

"Trust happens on both sides," said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. "You have to earn it every day at every level."

Chicago Supt. Eddie Johnson supplied few details, saying, "We don't want to give away the game plan."

Supt. Eddie Johnson said he saw potential violations by police in the videos of O'Neal's shooting.

"Today is the last day," the protester said. "No more Paul O'Neals. No more Laquan McDonalds." 

Experts to weigh in with City Council panel as pressure mounts to hire more officers.

The Independent Police Review Authority answered calls that video be released as soon as possible.

The officer who shot Paul O'Neal last week had a body camera, but it didn't record the incident.

Other video was expected to be released within two months by the Independent Police Review Authority.

Some South and West side communities are being "held hostage" by gun violence, Supt. Eddie Johnson said.

"If we want to show support for our officers, then ... our oath is to be out there," Johnson said.

Supt.  Eddie Johnson promised in June to assign more officers to the Jefferson Park Police District.

The number of South Loop shootings so far this year is higher than the total any year this decade. 

Activist groups said they were "sending peace and love" to those affected by the violence in Dallas.
