MAGNIFICENT MILE — The Peninsula hotel is building a new rooftop bar, a lofty project that's closed a street off the Mag Mile for now.

The yet-to-be-named bar will open in addition to the luxury hotel's Shanghai Terrace once it debuts, said Susan Ellefson, a Peninsula spokeswoman.

She declined to offer more specifics, saying "there's still a lot of concept and plans to work out."

Until it opens, the bar's construction will close a street off the Mag Mile. Superior Street between Michigan Avenue and Rush Street has been closed during the work, and so has the sidewalk between the hotel's entrance at 108 E. Superior and Michigan.

Ellefson said construction is being done "a few days at a time," and this most recent round will end later this week. It's possible the street will be closed again for rooftop work, but "that's to be determined," she said.

It's also possible the rooftop bar's construction will affect the seasonal ice rink the Peninsula opens on its roof every winter, Ellefson said, but those specifics also have yet to be decided.
