HYDE PARK — University of Chicago police said they now believe two armed robberies on Friday are connected.

University police on Monday night sent out a community alert after a person reported a second armed robbery on Friday that matched many of the details of another robbery.

At 8:15 p.m. Friday, a man was walking through the courtyard of an apartment building at 54th Street and South Hyde Park Boulevard, when three people came up to him. One pulled out a handgun while another pushed him down and took his gym bag and then all three ran away.

The man hurt his elbow in the fall and was taken to the hospital, according to university police.

Another robbery was reported at 10:35 p.m. Friday in the 5500 block of South Everett Avenue when two people in the vestibule of an apartment building were approached by three people, this time with two of them armed with handguns. One of the three punched one of the victims before taking their valuables and running away.

The Chicago Police Department is investigating both robberies.
