HYDE PARK — Registration is open for challengers to the title of best pie on the South Side.

The annual South Side Pie Challenge is coming Nov. 4 at the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club, 5480 S. Kenwood Ave. Serious bakers should start planning if they want to take home a ribbon in one of the four categories.

A panel of judges that often includes some of the best professional chefs in the city considers the best fruit, crème, nut and pumpkin or sweet potato pie.

To win the title, each contestant has to be able to capture lightning in a bottle twice and bake two pies, one for the judges to critique and another for the public to enjoy.

After the official judge-tasting, the public is invited to the club at 2 p.m. to try a slice of pie for $3 each.

The bakers' entry fee is $25, and proceeds go to local soup kitchens and food pantries. The event has raised more than $13,000 since it was started in 2012.

Half the challenge is coming up with a good pie name: last year’s winners included the “Pomme Pomme Pie,” “The Great Leslie” and “Blueberry 3.14.”
