DOWNTOWN — McDonald's Szechuan sauce is coming back to Chicago for the first time in nearly 20 years — and fans have the popular Cartoon Network show "Rick and Morty" to thank.

For one day only this Saturday, fans can head to four Chicago McDonald's locations to get a serving of the popular sauce.

The dipping side was first made for a limited run in 1998 to promote "Mulan," but in this year's season three opener of "Rick and Morty," main character Rick is heard going on a long rant about his obsession with the sauce — renewing interest and cravings for it that have since gone viral among fans.

In July, the fast food chain even sent co-creator Justin Roiland his very own half-gallon of the stuff.

McDonald's didn't stop there: To promote its new buttermilk chicken tenders, the restaurant is offering a new version of Szechuan sauce at locations across the country, including four in Chicago.

The restaurants serving the spicy, tangy condiment include:

• 1951 N. Western Ave. in Bucktown

• 2400 N. Lincoln Ave. in Lincoln Park

• 180 W. Adams St. in the Loop

• 5200 S. Lake Park Ave. in Hyde Park

The chain also is giving away 1,000 limited edition screen-printed posters at each of its locations (even those not offering the sauce) that pay homage to each of its 10 dipping sauces.

If you miss out Saturday, some fans on Reddit have attempted to recreate the sauce: To make it, take garlic, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, plum sake, Sriracha, ginger and brown sugar and simmer them for five minutes, stirring constantly, according to Time.
