Event creator and former Chatham resident Jenny Madere says she doesn’t do a lot of Chicago nightlife. When she moved to Hyde Park a couple of years ago she said there weren’t a lot of options for young black professionals. In July of this year, Madere, 35, began shopping the idea to black-owned businesses, seeking space for the event. Sip & Savor said yes.

“We've always wanted to do something with sipping and painting at our coffeehouses and our collaboration with Jenny couldn't have been more perfect,” said Englewood resident and owner Trez Van Pugh III. “We are passionate about ensuring the South Side gets its fair share of fun and hip events and we're excited for this.”

Madere said she wanted to find a way to “cater to young black professionals” in her neighborhood.

“I wanted to start something in Hyde Park where it becomes a regular thing,” she said. “There was a need for something different.”

Pairing events with trap music has become a national trend. In Chicago, there have been trap-music themed Silent Parties, trap and wine parties, trap yoga and even trap karaoke.

Trap music, which incorporates elements of hip-hop, crunk and house, is a subgenre that originated during the 1990s from Southern hip hop in the United States. Rappers like Young Jeezy, TI and Gucci Mane were some of the pioneers.

Over the years, the music has evolved as new rappers came onto the scene like Future and Migos. Most music lovers would argue there’s no clear definition of the music.

Madere said the playlist will definitely include some of her current favorites, Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow” and Yo Gotti’s “Rake It Up.”

This event is for those who either don’t do clubs, but still want to “turn up” or they are looking for something fun and artsy to do right in Hyde Park, she said.

“This is if you just want to be silly and jam with your friends, that’s the kind of vibe I wanted,” she said.

Tickets are $40 and include a free glass of wine and all painting materials and supplies. It's not BYOB, but liquor will be for sale. The class will be instructed by local painter Ayo Catrance. Purchase them in advance here.
