Teens Stole Man's Car Then Crashed; 'Was It Worth It?' Owner Asks

CHICAGO — Two teens stole a car at gunpoint and then led officers on a chase on the South Side early Tuesday, according to reports.

At 2:05 a.m., a 45-year-old man was sitting in the driver's seat of a car in the 2600 block of South King Drive when someone walked up, took out a gun and told the driver to get out of his car, police said. The man got out and a second person walked up to him and told him to take off his shoes.

The teens got into the car, a silver 2014 Chevy Malibu, and drove south on King Drive, police said. Officers saw the stolen car and tried to stop it, but the thieves refused to pull over.

The teens hit a UPS truck near 63rd Street and Prairie Avenue and were taken into custody, police said. They were taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where their conditions were not available but they were listed as "stable," police said.

No other injuries were reported, police said.

The owner of the car, identified as Reginald Clark, told TV reporters at the scene he was having car trouble when someone started knocking on his window. After Clark told him to get away from his car, one of the teens took out a handgun and forced him out of the car.

Asked what he would tell the teens, Clark responded, "Was it worth it?"

"They could have both lost their lives. What did you get out of it?" Clark said.
