WEST TOWN — Three city parks this month will host free family-friendly performances of the outdoor spectacle "A Persephone Pageant," which fuses Greek mythical tales with true stories of environmental justice.
The weekend shows by Walkabout Theater Company are part of Chicago Park District's "Night Out in the Parks" series and will transport attendees into "a mythical world that directly parallels our own: Persephone as Lake Michigan, Demeter as Land and Hades as Man's Creations," according to a news release.
All shows are scheduled to start at 6 p.m. on:
• Aug. 20 in Smith Park, 2526 W. Grand Ave. in West Town
• Aug. 26 at Rainbow Beach Park, 2873 E. 75th St. in South Shore
• Aug. 27 at Walsh Park, 1722 N. Ashland Ave. in Bucktown
A spokesman for Walkabout Theater Company said "A Persephone Pageant" will tackle the question of,"What happens when Man's Creations usurp and consume the water, and we the people disrupt the relationship between water and land?"
In addition to the free performances, a special Persephone Project benefit show will take place at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts in Hyde Park on Sept. 2, and the production will also be featured at the Ragdale Foundation’s Ring Performance in suburban Lake Forest on Sept. 16.
