Garage Burglary Spree Leads Police To Warn City: Lock Your Garage Door

NEAR NORTH — Police are advising North Side residents to keep their garages locked after a wave of burglaries extending back to June.

The Area Central Bureau of Detectives issued a community alert for the Near North Police District Thursday evening after more than a dozen garage burglaries, many of which took place during the daytime.

Police emphasized, "In most incidents, the victims left their garage doors open or unlocked when high-end bicycles and other property was taken."

According to police, the garage burglaries took place:

• In the 1000 block of West Webster Avenue, June 8, in the morning.

• In the 1000 block of North Larrabee Street,  June 9, in the afternoon.

• In the 2000 block of North Racine Avenue, between  June 16-17, in the late evening hours or early morning.

• In the 2300 block of North Bosworth Avenue, June 16, in the afternoon.

• In the 2200 block of North Racine Avenue, June 18, in the morning.

• In the 2000 block of North Halsted Street, June 19, in the morning.

• In the 1900 block of North Lincoln Avenue, between  June 21-23, in the evening.

• In the 1700 block of North Fremont Street, between June 22-23, in the evening.

• In the 1300 block of North Cleveland Avenue, between June 28-30, in the evening.

• In the 2200 block of North Greenview Avenue, between July 8-9, in the evening.

• In the 1600 block of North Bissell Street, July 18, in evening.

• In the 2200 block of North Greenview Avenue, July 20, in the morning.

• In the 2100 block of North Wayne Street, July 23, in the evening.

• In the 1600 block of North Vine Street, Sunday and Monday, in the evening.

Police advised local residents to keep garage doors and windows locked and to keep a record of serial numbers of household items. In the event of a theft, don't touch anything, call 911 immediately and make copies of any available surveillance video to be passed on to detectives. Call 911 to report any suspicious activities or cars, including license plates if possible.
