COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A 33-year-old man is accused of repeatedly demanding sex from a stranger after breaking into her Northwest Side apartment and stealing tampons, cherries and credit cards.

The 28-year-old victim was awakened about 1:30 a.m. July 23 when Joven Cuyugan walked into her bedroom, stood at the foot of her bed and asked three times whether she would have sex with him, prosecutors said.

The woman screamed "no" and demanded Cuyugan leave before reaching for her phone to call 911, Assistant State's Attorney Joseph Carlson said during a bond hearing Thursday at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse, 2650 S. California Ave.

Cuyugan bolted out of the apartment's back door and ran away through an alley in the 4600 block of North Kildare Avenue, prosecutors said.

The woman and her 27-year-old roommate, who'd been awakened by the commotion, soon realized a MacBook, credit cards, tampons and cherries from the refrigerator were missing from their home, Carlson said.

According to authorities, a neighbor who'd seen Cuyugan skulking near the building witnessed Cuyugan's escape on July 23. That same neighbor tried to confront Cuyugan after spotting him near the Irving Park building again Monday, prosecutors said, but Cuyugan was able to escape once more.

When the roommates returned to their apartment Monday, it appeared as if someone had been inside in their home, Carlson said. The women hadn't been in the apartment for a while, and a hole had been cut into a pillow belonging to the woman Cuyugan propositioned for sex.

The neighbor spotted Cuyugan lurking near the building again Wednesday, according to prosecutors — and this time was able to detain the man until police arrived. Cuyugan was carrying the victims' missing MacBook at the time, Carlson said.

Cuyugan is charged with attempted aggravated criminal sexual assault, burglary, theft and possession of burglary tools, court records show. His home address was unavailable Thursday.

Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. set bail at $400,000.
