By Tanveer Ali | August 2, 2017 3:40pm

CHICAGO — As a part of a nationwide sting, the Cook County Sheriff's Office arrested 140 people for sex buying or trafficking.

The arrests were a part of the 14th edition of the National Johns Suppression Initiative, which ran across 17 states and resulted in over 1,000 arrests.

In Cook County, 137 of the arrests were of sex buyers.

During the operation, which took place June 28 to July 31, the sheriff's office worked with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and shut down three brothels. Three people were charged with operating those brothels while four others were charged with patronizing those brothels.

Authorities also said six adult victims were rescued thanks to the initiative.
