WOODLAWN — People eager to see the solar eclipse on Aug. 21 may gather on 63rd Street Beach.
The solar eclipse will be one a rare instance where the moon almost completely blocks out the light of the sun in Chicago for a short period of time.
People will celebrate this rare astronomical event on the beach at 6300 S. Lake Shore Drive.
Families are encouraged to come out, but organizers warn folks not to look directly at the sun or risk eye damage even though it will be partially blocked by the sun. But there will be glasses and other materials set up for people to view the eclipse without danger.
Special art and education projects are being planned for the event sponsored by the Adler Planetarium, the Chicago Park District and neighborhood groups.
Eclipses can be dangerous to watch and people interested in seeing it should follow NASA’s safety warnings.
