EDGEWATER — Want to become part of local history? Five units in two of Edgewater's most famous and historic buildings are up for grabs.

Four of them are found in the pink, X-shaped Edgewater Beach Apartments building at 5555 N. Sheridan Road — including a three-bedroom, 2½-bathroom on the top floor with south-facing views of Downtown going for $475,000.

In May, an "extremely rare" unit on the second floor, one of only four with patios, hit the market for $259,000.

Just down the block, another rare condo is available in the castlelike "Manor House," 1031 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. It was once rumored to have been the former British consulate in Chicago, but the Edgewater Historical Society has said there's not enough evidence to prove that claim.

Still, its inclusion in the heart of one of the neighborhood's most architecturally significant and diverse districts, coupled with its decorative and royalty-evoking features, makes available units a rarity in the building.

Both buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and are located within the Bryn Mawr Historic District.

Check out the listings below.

2-Bed, 1-Bath, $354,900, Manor House, 1031 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. Unit 2A

At Bryn Mawr and Kenmore avenues sits the elegant, 16-unit Manor House, arranged in a U shape with a gated courtyard complete with a statue and fountain. The "rarely available" 1,600-square-foot, two-bedroom, one-bathroom, built in 1907, features an open layout with views over Bryn Mawr and boasts both vintage charm and modern amenities, such as in its remodeled kitchen. Wood floors, custom built-ins, a wood-burning fireplace, granite countertops and stainless steel appliances round out some of the home's best offerings.

3-Bed, 2½-Bath, $475,000, Edgewater Beach Apartments, 5555 N. Sheridan Road Unit 1903

Located on the top floor of the "sunset pink" Edgewater Beach Apartments, this 2,000-square-foot abode includes stunning, sweeping views of Lake Shore Drive, Lake Michigan, Downtown and more. The building was constructed in 1928 as a complement to the neighboring Edgewater Beach Hotel. A fresh coat of paint and refinished hardwood floors have brought this unit into shape, and because the building is a co-op, the monthly $1,896 assessment includes property taxes, heat, cable, internet, cooking gas and other utilities, and a payment toward the building's capital projects fund.

3-Bed, 2½-Bath, $439,000, Edgewater Beach Apartments, 5555 N. Sheridan Road Unit 606

Natural light is a top feature of a unit on the sixth floor, also offering views of the lake and surrounding green areas. The dwelling's second and third bedrooms are connected via a shared bathroom. One of the rooms contains a custom Murphy bed, while the other can be used as an additional bedroom or office. The bedrooms are carpeted, but there's hardwood underneath. Assessments are $1,766 per month.

3-Bed, 3-Bath, $419,000, Edgewater Beach Apartments, 5555 N. Sheridan Road Unit 1010

On the 10th floor, this unit offers two full bedrooms and an office/den in its 1,800-square-foot floor plan. Recently renovated, the condo now features a gourmet kitchen with 42-inch maple cabinets, stainless steel appliances and granite countertops, while the rest of the unit has high ceilings, new molding and baseboards and natural light from all directions. Like the rest of the building, the condo also is privy to the co-op's many amenities, such as its heated indoor pool and expansive outdoor grounds.

The smallest and most affordable of the lot is an updated 750-square-foot unit on the building's second floor. The corner unit showcases new crown molding throughout, as well as a semi-updated kitchen and cozy, separate dining nook. One floor below sits the building's ornate foyer and lobby, library, an arcade with local businesses and access to both Sheridan Road and the lakefront.
