IRVING PARK — The vision of a continuous biking and walking path along the North Branch of the Chicago River took a tiny step forward Wednesday.

The Chicago Park District Board unanimously approved the acceptance of a donation of a quarter-acre of private land that will allow the proposed riverfront trail to connect California and Horner Parks.

The River Park North Homeowners' Association, whose town homes abut California Park along the river and Irving Park Road, is donating the land. The town houses were approved by City Council as a planned development in 2003, with several conditions in place regarding potential improvements along the waterway, including a "future underbridge riverwalk connection under Irving Park Road."

The Irving Park underbridge, in tandem with the planned Riverview Bridge to the south, will create a seamless riverfront path from Belmont to Montrose.

The Chicago Department of Transportation will oversee construction of the underbridge. A construction timeline was not immediately available.
