LINCOLN PARK — The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum holds its first Summer Nature Festival Wednesday evening.

The free event from 5-8 p.m. at the museum, 2430 N. Cannon Drive, includes admission to the museum's exhibits and a variety of activities such as hiking, birdwatching and even casting off the museum's back pier on North Pond.

Museum staff will offer encounters with its resident animals, including access to the Butterfly Haven.

A National Park Service representative leads will lead from the museum, the Chicago Ornithological Society will lead the birdwatching and the Lincoln Park Casting Club will lead the casting on North Pond.

The patio will be open with views of the museum grounds and the city skyline, and the event will also feature face painting, lawn games and nature crafts.

Music will be provided by Cicada Summer, and free ice pops will be distributed. Other food, drinks, beer and wine will be sold.

The museum suggests that those interested make online reservations, but it's not required for admission.
