ALBANY PARK — Catalytic converters were swiped from a slew of cars in the Albany Park, Irving Park and North Park area in mid-July, according to a community alert issued by police.

Aside from one theft reported June 27, the remainder occurred between July 11 and July 15. No suspects have been identified.

Thieves prize catalytic converters for their valuable metals, which can net $150 at scrap yards or on the black market.

The converters take just seconds to saw off a car. SUV models that sit higher off the ground — particularly Jeeps and Honda Elements — are among the most frequent targets.
