ENGLEWOOD — I Grow Chicago's Peace House has been without a wheelchair-accessible ramp since it was built, but now organizers are raising money to build one.

They said when they built the space, "we unintentionally left out a portion of our community."

"So many of our Englewood community members are disabled and cannot walk up the stairs due to gun violence," they wrote on the fundraising page.

"Our next-door neighbor, the mother of some of our favorite children, is in a wheelchair and can't get into our Peace House. We need to change this."

The group has exceeded its $852 goal, but is still accepting donations.

I Grow Chicago hopes to have the project completed by the end of August so everyone in the community can fully participate in all of their end of summer and fall programs.

The organization turned an abandoned West Englewood home into its Peace House in 2014. It became a safe place for the community. Through their programing, residents gets jobs or job training and a "new sense of hope."

It offers 15 different programs for all ages.
