CHICAGO — A 40-year-old woman was shot dead while she slept in her home in Washington Park early Tuesday, police said.

At 5:26 a.m., the woman was sleeping in the 5200 block of South King Drive when someone shot into the home, police said. The woman was hit in her buttocks and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified the victim as Rhonda Hughes, 40, of the King Drive address.

Neighbors said the woman lived in the basement apartment with her husband and two teenage sons and mostly kept to herself.

"I'm going to be looking out my windows all the time now because you don't know what can happen," said Barbara Williams, who has lived in the building for eight months.

Other neighbors who did not want to be identified out of fear of retribution said they heard five or six shots around 5:15 a.m., the only disturbance of an otherwise quiet night on the block.

Police said Tuesday that they believe the apartment was being targeted in the shooting but are not sure yet whether the woman was the intended target.

No arrests have been made yet in connection to the shooting.
