CHICAGO — Renters interested in making the plunge to homeownership are encouraged to stop by Old Irving Brewing Co., 4419 W. Montrose Ave., where real estate agents will share tips and advice in a free public seminar set for 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Sponsored by the neighborhood group Jefferson Park Forward, the First Time Homebuyers Essentials Seminar will "review the process, down payment assistance programs and mortgages that may be available," plus the potential financial benefits of owning versus renting, according to an event description.

"The home-buying process can seem intimidating, making it hard for a first time buyer to even feel ready to start," said Kristina Brucker, one of the event's organizers. "We felt this seminar would help people understand what the process looks like and most importantly, what programs and mortgage assistance programs may be available to a first-time buyer."

The event will also include free appetizers and beer samples, Brucker said.
