Woodlawn Twins' Lemonade Stand Raises Thousands For Children's Hospital

CHICAGO — What started off as a lemonade stand aimed to raise money for a foosball table turned into a fundraising effort that now donates money for La Rabida Children's Hospital each year.

Woodlawn twins David and Maya Blackmon started their lemonade stand in the summer of 2011, when they were only 7 years old. Every year since, the twins have raised money to buy educational games, books, strollers and toys for La Rabida, a South Side hospital that serves children regardless of their family's ability to pay.

The first year, the twins raised over $100 and used it to purchase items from the hospital's Amazon wish list.

Now 13, the twins have increased the money raised each year and started a GoFundMe page for donations. As of Friday the twins had raised more than a one-third of their $1,000 goal. The gifts bought are delivered in person to the hospital by the twins.

This year, the Blackmon Twins' lemonade stand — now called a "Beverage Bar" — is set to open at 11 a.m. Saturday. The stand will be in front of the family's home marked with yellow balloons, at 63rd Street and Kimbark Avenue in Woodlawn.

Aside from lemonade, the stand's menu has expanded to include vanilla lemonade, mango iced tea and other frozen beverages.

All proceeds go to La Rabida Children's Hospital.
