COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A repeat felon was denied bail Thursday in the South Chicago murder of 28-year-old Antone Jackson.

Jackson was gunned down outside his home in the 7900 block of South Ridgeland Avenue about 6:30 p.m. Monday, according to police and prosecutors. The man suffered five gunshot wounds to his side, wrist, buttocks, thigh and back.

Prosecutors have charged Jeremy Starks, 34, with first-degree murder and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

Authorities did not provide a possible motive Thursday.

According to court records, Starks has prior convictions for attempted theft, robbery, aggravated battery, aggravated battery to a child and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Prosecutors allege Starks drove a white Buick Century to Jackson's home Monday night. Witnesses saw the two men talk outside after Starks opened his trunk and removed an item, Assistant State's Attorney Nora Gill said during a bond hearing Thursday inside the Leighton Criminal Courthouse, 2650 S. California Ave.

According to witnesses, Jackson soon raised his hands in the air above his head and yelled, "Don't do it! Don't do it!"

That's when Starks, of south suburban Park Forest, pulled a gun and shot Jackson multiple times, prosecutors said. Starks then got back into his car and drove away, according to Gill.

Police patrolling the area heard six to eight gunshots. When officers responded to the scene, prosecutors said, witnesses pointed toward the fleeing Buick.

Police arrested Starks following a short chase in which they saw Starks toss a gun out of his driver's side window, Gill said. Officers recovered the gun, a Glock 30 that fires .45 caliber bullets. Police said they found five .45 caliber shell casings near Jackson's body.

Multiple witnesses identified Starks as the shooter, prosecutors said.

Assistant Public Defender Crystal Carbellos said Starks works for the city doing maintenance in aldermen's offices. Starks' employment could not immediately be confirmed Thursday. He is married with a child and grandchild, Carbellos said.

Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil denied Starks bail.
