WICKER PARK — A new membership-based app called Freevo offers free food and drinks — if users are quick about it.

Launched last week, Freevo requires users to scramble to get to a Chicago restaurant or coffee shop within 45 minutes of selecting the freebie and then upload their receipts afterward.

The app was developed in partnership with Restaurant Depot, a restaurant supply store, to help attract consumers to local businesses. So far, there are 150 participating restaurants to choose from including popular local hotspots like Arami, Lazo’s Tacos, Mi Pi and Janik's Cafe.

The app creators said in a news release that the average Freevo user will likely bring friends along with them and order more than just their free item.

Users of the app can get more free food coupons to redeem at other spots after they snap a photo of their receipt and upload it to the app. Once they select which free food offers they want, there is a 45-minute deadline to get to the restaurant or coffee shop before the offer expires, according to the app's website.

Though membership costs $20 per year for unlimited usage of the app, the app creators are waiving the $20 fee through July 31, according to a news release.
