RAVENSWOOD — Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, but fewer than 10 percent of people donate this life-saving resource.

The American Red Cross has issued an alert that it can't keep up with demand for blood, and the Ravenswood community is responding.

Switchfast Technologies, in conjunction with LifeSource, is hosting a blood drive 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday at 4043 N. Ravenswood Ave. Suite 123.

While walk-ins are welcome, appointments can be booked in advance online (click here).

In general, donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health and feeling well. To check your donor eligibility, click here.

The entire process lasts approximately an hour. Donors should hydrate before and after blood is drawn. Be sure to bring a photo ID and list of medications.
