IRVING PARK — Horner Park's restored riverbank is still off limits to foot traffic while plants are establishing themselves, but neighbors can get a closer look at the work in progress from a unique vantage point — by boat.

Friends of the Chicago River and the Chicago Park District are sponsoring a guided canoe trip from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, heading out from the River Park boathouse (on the west side of the river, off Argyle Street).

Ecologist Byron Tsang will lead the tour, talking about the wetland plants on view along the waterway and helping people identify the various species on the riverbank, particularly those introduced at Horner Park.

Advance registration is required (click here) and the cost is $8 per person. If registration is full, individuals can bring their own boat to join the tour.
