KENWOOD — Cellist Yo-Yo Ma will give a free concert with the Chicago Civic Orchestra and neighborhood high school students Saturday night.

Ma will perform with the orchestra and Kenwood Academy students at 7 p.m. Saturday at the school, 5015 S. Blackstone Ave., in a concert of Beethoven, Bach and Vivaldi open to the community.

The students have been collaborating with the orchestra since April to prepare for the concert under the direction of conductor Michael Stern.

Friday at the school will be a day full of rehearsals, a workshop with Ma and pop-up performances just for the students by chamber groups. The day for students will culminate with a concert for their classmates with members of the orchestra and Ma under the direction of Stern.

Ma will return to the school Saturday night for an open concert for the community that will include performances of Beethoven’s "Leonore Overture No. 3," Vivaldi’s "Concerto in G Minor," Bach’s “Sleeper’s Wake,” Paul Desmond’s “Take Five” and Jean Sibelius’ "Symphony No. 2 in D Major."

Tickets are free, but reservations are required and can be made on the orchestra’s website.
